About

The SafeCity initiative was formed to tackle South Africa’s dramatically increasing crime rate. Powered by groundbreaking surveillance technology, in collaboration with private security and public law enforcement, we aim to bring safety to the doorstep of every South African.

What is SafeCity?

Vumacam has invested R60 million to kickstart SafeCity by installing and activating 1850 cameras across the city of which 350 new cameras have been installed in previously unprotected areas.
SafeCity Partners are able to access the full network of over 6000 of Vumacam’s cameras to gain city-wide situational awareness critical to understanding criminal patterns, assist with crime prevention and investigations.

The SafeCity intiative means that you and your loved ones can have additional safety in your neighbourhood streets, ride your bikes in the parks and green spaces without worrying about something happening, and provides security so that everyone can get safely to and from their homes.
We can’t do it without you
Your Security Provider, who has protected your home and suburb, has now committed significant time and resources to the SafeCity initiative which will help protect you and your loved ones when you move around the city: after all, crime does not have borders.

We are turning the tide on crime in the City of Joburg, but we want to do more. You can contribute to this by supporting your Security Provider and your actions can help to make a significant impact.

As criminals become increasingly sophisticated, greater coordination and efficiency in intervention becomes critical,
while Vumacam and private security companies support SAPS daily, E2 employs a far more coordinated apporach and is a critical part of Vumacam’s mission to ensure smarter, safer cities.

SafeCity will improve the collaboration between private and public sector by connecting SAPS and the private security industry through the Eyes and Ears (E2) Fusion Centre which will monitor escalated alerts and deploy SAPS resources to where they are needed most.

The E2 Fusion Centre is an official and coordinated joint crime fighting initiative between the South African Police Service (SAPS), Business Against Crime South Africa (BACSA) and the Private Security Industry (PSI).

The collaboration between the private and public sector provides the SAPS with additional situational awareness by using the Private Security Industry’s (PSI) geographical deployment footprint and sharing of information.

Operational responses are enhanced where there are incidents that rely on situational information and where there may be concerns of safety for both the SAPS and the PSI. This collaboration encourages the PSI to assist each other in a non-commercial and non-competitive capacity.

Our growing list of partners

“E2 is a much-needed initiative and a game changer in tackling crime in South Africa. Each role player – SAPS, private security including Vumacam – has a crucial role in fighting crime, but combing our efforts will see a far more effective means to doing so.
We fully support and endorse the SafeCity Initiative, which will promote the sharing not only of resources, but intelligence and manpower. With the ability to deploy on-the-ground and in-air units, we can respond with urgency and the back-up required to ensure response units have not only additional eyes on any scene, but also, the support they need when responding to events that may put them in danger.”
